Male pelvic health treatments
The main treatment approaches for pelvic floor problems in men are pelvic floor relaxation, downtraining and stretches. There may be benefits from more holistic exercises and relaxation strategies too. Some clinicians may suggest trying techniques to work on the soft tissues of the pelvic floor muscles. This may be called pelvic floor massage or trigger point therapy. The correct name is myo-fascial release.
Essentially, it means using either a finger or a small gadget, such as a medical grade glass wand, to apply gentle pressure or stretching movements to the pelvic floor muscles. This is usually done on the perineum (the part between the base of the penis and the anus), or just inside the anus.
The pelvic health physiotherapist may show you how this is done, and normally you will continue to do it yourself as part of a home treatment programme. Some clinicians may do the sessions for you, it depends on what they think is the best course of action. It rarely needs to be done in the long-term as it will be part of a holistic package to restore pelvic floor health.
It is important to note that you always have full control over this, and at no point will a treatment of this type be performed if you do not consent to it.
